ANKARA PHOTOGRAPHY ARTISTS’ ASSOCIATION (AFSAD)
AFSAD was founded in 1977 to promote the art of photography, cooperation and solidarity among photographers and to provide platforms to discuss philosophical, aesthetic and technical issues related to photography. AFSAD gained the status of “public non-profit association” in 1991 and it is the only photography association with this status in Turkey.
Anyone who is interested in photography and cinema, or who makes intellectual and critical studies in these fields can become a member of AFSAD. It currently has 450 members.
AFSAD is an active member of The Photographic Arts Federation of Turkey (TFSF). The accreditation process of the Association to the European Union is about to be completed.
AFSAD is institutionalized with the principle of fulfilling the social function of the art of photography as a non-governmental organization. Therefore, it conducts documentary photography works, artistic projects and social activities inspired by social issues in accordance with the conditions of the day. Besides photography, AFSAD is also interested in short films and short film-making. In this regard, AFSAD carries out training programs for amateur and professional photographers as well as seminars on scripts, short films, art history, and art philosophy.
Engaged in research and publication activities on cultural and artistic subjects, AFSAD publishes a periodical magazine, called ‘Kontrast’, as well.
Aiming to bring different cultures together by means of photography, AFSAD has carried out many important exhibitions, photo shows, interviews and projects in Turkey and abroad for its purposes. AFSAD realizes the majority of its projects with its own resources and collaborates with various public institutions and non-governmental organizations.
AFSAD continues its activities with the above aims and objectives.
